UNESCO identifies and protects sites that are of particular relevance from a cultural and natural point of view. Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1999 and 2001 respectively, the former being an important expression of the Mediterranean material culture and the latter being a unique example of Italian garden.
